Drug use on World Health Day

On World Health Day, we look at the impact of drug use around the world and its close relationship with the development of addiction.

According to the World Drug Report, one in every 20 adults, or about 250 million people between the ages of 15 and 64 (equivalent to the populations of Germany, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom combined) used at least one drug during 2014. In addition, data also indicates that over 29 million people who use drugs suffer related disorders, while only one in six is in treatment.

The considerable growth in the world’s population will continue to lead to a general increase in the number of people who use drugs. In 2006, 208 million people used drugs, while in 2014 the number of users increased to 247 million.

The picture of global drug use is unclear, because many users take several drugs. In addition, the distribution of drugs worldwide varies according to the type of narcotic drug and geographical region in question. Each drug has its own trafficking routes depending on where it is produced, making it difficult to combat the problem. Spain is Europe’s main entry point for cocaine.

Raising awareness to break the vicious circle

Due to the problematic control of drug trafficking, international policies to combat drug use focus on providing information and raising awareness among individuals and the general population. All aim to break the vicious circle of disorders resulting from drug use.

This also means that in situations where prevention has been insufficient, greater social awareness about the importance of recovery treatments for addiction is needed. Addiction treatment is the most appropriate way for those affected to recover their lives, since most are in denial of their situation, and refuse or are themselves unable to make the changes necessary to take back control of their lives.
