On Triora’s 15th anniversary, Michel Odufre, co-creator of the Triora Model looks back at Triora’s development in the Netherlands and Triora’s expansion abroad
“In 2001 we were allowed to set up something new for addicted adults who were still functioning in the world, but could certainly use some help.
On 7 February 2003, we opened a pilot project under the name Mirage with eight beds, four patients and six team members... And from there we grew, step by step, exceeding all expectations. We expanded into an entire floor, a second building and then a third.
After completing residential treatment, patients then needed aftercare. We opened outpatient clinics in The Hague, and later in Haarlem, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Forty former patients now often join the Tuesday evening aftercare group.
Things really took off in 2011 when we received the go ahead to become a separate, private company, under the umbrella of Parnassia Groep, the Netherlands’ largest provider of mental health care.
At this stage, we were doing so well that we were allowed to continue to grow, and were given the opportunity of offering our treatment model to even more patients by moving into the Ockenrode estate in The Hague - a beautiful clinic accommodating 41 patients, specially renovated for our needs. A dream come true!
In 2013, the idea that we could even rise to the international challenge, was almost incomprehensible to many, but we took up that challenge. As a result of Triora’s expansion, today we have two private rehabilitation centres in Spain. The first, Triora Alicante, opened in 2015 in modern, newly refurbished premises. Triora MonteAlminara was added to our group last year in an attractive setting in the hills near Malaga. Both clinics also have outpatient facilities. We are well on our way to helping many more people with addiction problems to discover a meaningful life with our unique and effective treatment model.
To develop our unique treatment model, we took on experienced experts as full and indispensable team members, to build a bridge between professional evidence-based treatments and the 12 step world of the anonymous alcoholics. Step by step we integrated the vision of the self-help world in our thinking and doing. After a year, ex-patients started a new Cocaine Anonymous group. Over the years, a lot of great things have happened in the self-help world in The Hague, to which we also contributed from the outset.
Our treatment model developed with time and has been in permanent evolution. In its first stages it was known as the Mirage Model, and when the opportunity came to develop internationally, it became the Triora Model.
Caring for family and loved ones
Step by step, we have also developed appropriate care for our patients’ family members – both at our clinics together with the patient, and outside the clinic specifically for loved ones.
Typical of the numerous, great, though sometimes difficult changes we have gone through, is that things often went very differently than we had envisaged, but ultimately brought us to where we wanted to go. Flexible, dynamic and pragmatic, we have followed our intuition, bowed with the storms, and seized the opportunities offered to us with both hands!
A remarkable bunch, if you consider our team of professionals of all levels, experienced experts, volunteers and trainees. A few were there from day one, which is, I think, very special. Of course a lot has happened since then - positions within the team and management have changed and shifted many times, many have joined us, a few have really left, while some have returned to base.
Everyone who works with us – whether in the Netherlands or in Spain - forms part of our whole and subscribes to our core values both personally and professionally.
I would like to thank all our team members, managers, directors and board members who have smoothed the way, from the bottom of a grateful heart, and without a doubt on behalf of the countless free and happy former patients that Triora has helped to regain a meaningful life over the last 15 years.
